RESOURCES Vocational Counselling: Changes and Challenges on the Labour Market. The Jubilee book to Honour Prof. Bernd-Joachim Ertelt. Joanna Gorna & Daniel Kukla (Eds.). Czestochowa: Jan Dlugosz University, 2014. ISBN: 978-83-7455-389-6 This book was published on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Bernd-Joachim Ertelt’s research work, and is an important recognition of theories and practices in the field of career counselling promoted by Him, and provides a broad insight into the recent development of key concepts, methods and paradigms written by well-known scientists in the field. The second idea of this book was to stress the acknowledgement of Bernd-Joachim Ertelt’s contributions to the field of career counselling development in Poland by occasion of celebration His 25th anniversary as a member of the academic teaching staff of the Faculty of Pedagogy at the Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. The book comprises an introduction and three main chapters spread as broadly as Bernd-Joachim Ertelt’s research, scientific interests and publications; from the career counselling issues in changing economy and cultural society through organizational and practice models for counsellors till problems of unemployment and quality of life. In his preface, Wlodzimierz Trzeciak highlights the pivotal role of Bernd-Joachim Ertelt in the development of a framework for German-Polish cooperation towards development of modern counselling in Poland by outlining the historical developments and illustrating with well-chosen examples of the cooperation and of the European projects. The editors pay attention to the history and current achievements of Ertelt’s work at the Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. They stress his role within international projects as leader and head of the Department of Vocational Counselling. The authors deal with a range of issues spread from the role of unpredictability and fast changes in present society through professionalization of career counsellors till the problems of unemployment and quality of life. The wide range of topics is not unintentional but it really covers the broad scope of Bernd-Joachim scientific interests and his contribution to developments of career theories, solutions to practice and applications to education and further training of lifelong guidance professionals. The contributors to the first chapter pay most attention to various aspects of vocational counselling, career developments and decision making. Next, they consider modern theories of careers and counselling strategies. Augustyn Banka describes important aspects of the role of transnational vocational counselling, which can play the role of a programme supporting the European youth mobility. He emphasizes diagnostic problems of reasons for career choice in transnational context focusing the problem of a place attachment and meaning of home for migrants. Adam Biela introduce a concept of agoral gothering as a new concept in experienced peaceful collective behaviours, which can be used as a tool to interpret the large-scale political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe. Wiliam Schulz draws attention to the big gap between theory and practice in career counselling and proposes the convergence of career development theory into a comprehensive theory. He accentuates that his concept of career comprehensive theory is step by step process of initial endeavour to operationalize the contributions of Trait-Factor theory, Holland’s theory, Super’s theory and Social Learning theory. Kestutis Pukelis provides a theoretical reasoning in the field of career theories, arguing the concept of career designing against the concept of career guidance. He proposes to replace the “career guidance” term with the “career designing” term, and considers a difference between “career designing theories” and “career counselling strategies”. Jean-Jacques Ruppert and Andreas Frey dispute a press release entitled “Light and Dark Times – The Value of Career Guidance in an Economic Crises ” published by IAEVG in June 2009. Authors invent, on the base of short historical analysis of the economic crises in Europe, the suggestions what is to be done in present circumstances. Jean Guichard presents evolution of the career counseling concept in the life design paradigm and career decisions in the liquid modern reality. He points also thoughts to depict the achievements of Bernd-Joachim Ertelt’s contributions, especially valuable role of vocational information for the design of client’s learning process. This article is important for theoreticians and practitioners in helping them gain better understanding of the importance of career counseling in general. Laura Gressnerova focuses on the impact of the Erasmus Multilateral project Development and Implementation of Common Bachelor’s Degree Progrmme in the European Context to the career guidance activities in Slovakia and Andreás Zakar brings together the vast aspects of the mutidimentional vocational counselling in Hungary. Alicja Kargulowa endeavours to stress a lot of multi aspect challenges to the concepts of contemporary guidance concluding the need for developing flexible solutions to support all social entities as well as researchers by continuous cooperation. Also Violetta Duda seems to share the opinion in the context of cultural adaptation to market needs, paying attention to multiculturalism as a progressive phenomenon. The second chapter of the book starts with up to date global problems of the graduates entering the labour market and challenges following the reform of the education system and labour market demands against the crisis towards achieving the goals of the European 2020 strategy. Considering the problems, Czesław Noworol is concerned about the dual education system, effective transition from the world of education to the world of work, and mobility of graduates. Michael Scharpf and Alisa Zillmann contemplate the problem from the German perspective focusing the career guidance education at the University of the Federal Employment Agency. They pay also attention to the need for internationalization of academic qualifications and high degree of curricula coherence as well as mobility of students. They concentrate that the quality assurance in career guidance services depends on the qualifications of the guidance counsellors in the EU member states, thus it is highly related to the quality of learning outcomes of university graduates. Jean-Pierre Dauwalder assumes modern guidance where career counsellors entail a process of individual adaptive heuristics, survival strategies and coping with bounded rationalities to transform it into life-design for their clients. He prefers the contextual analysis as the reasonable tool for constructing life-design patterns. Luis Sobrado, Cristina Ceinos, Ma Luisa Rodicio and Camilo Ocampo start to discuss the topic of virtual guidance based on various techniques and resources. They discuss e-guidance in various contexts and problems focusing its enhancement to build the knowledge society, and lifelong training and guidance. The topic is continued in the next two articles. Daniel Kukla and Marta Zając notice an extended impact of virtual environment to development of vocational counselling, smoothing the progress of the system in the context of quality and professionalization of counsellors activity. Olga Łodyga stresses the importance of ICT tools on the labour market. She believes that digital competences are basic to education and vocational guidance in labour market services and career information. In particular she supposes didactical games as a method for developing key competences. The third Chapter of the book deals with problems of people on or beyond the labour market. It starts with Romuald Derbis psychological deliberations on human life quality. He has faith in implementing coherent life quality models and corresponding measurement tools to the career guidance theory. Next, Joanna Górna considers the problems of people approaching the end of their professional career or already finished it indicating the most important matters to be solved in order to facilitate them to be active on the labour market. She focuses the need for scientific research to elaborate new or enhance existing theories and methodologies for career counselling for those people. Elżbieta Antosz, Monika Śliwakowska and Edyta Wiśniewska present a research report on various problems of job-hunting process in unemployed women. The presented results reveal a new light onto the vision of the labour market from the women perspective. Zdzisław Wołk pays attention to importance of idiosyncratic treatment of each long-term unemployed person in every individual process of career guidance. dr hab. dr Czesław Noworol, prof. UJ
